Thirteen students at Fordham University in New York City have come down with what authorities believe is the mumps, a viral disease caused by a virus.

Fordham said, via a statement regarding the diagnosis, that so far, no lab tests have confirmed the problem, but the mumps seemed the most likely, according to the New York Daily News.

Thursday Fordham's campus carried 12 of those cases, with another at the Lincoln Center campus in mid-town Manhattan.

The symptoms of mumps are not always so easy to detect early on, with infected individuals carrying the ability to infect others for up to two days before even showing symptoms.

All incoming students were required to get a vaccination against mumps, as well as a number of other infections.

"Mumps in college-age men and women usually runs its course without any lasting effects," Fordham said in a statement. "Nonetheless, the University is trying to see what connection there might be among the affected students while stepping up the frequency and intensity of cleanings in communal bathrooms."
