Caffeine May Worsen Menopausal Symptoms

Previous studies have examined the dangers of caffeine. Not only can the commonly used licit drug be addictive, it can cause insomnia, increased anxiety, irritability and trouble concentrating, overall, if consumed too frequently. However, other findings have suggested that certain amounts of caffeine can be good for you. Study results have revealed that a daily cup of coffee can help to burn fat, improve physical performance and even reduce the risk of Type II diabetes.
Now, a recent study published in the journal Menopause found that for women going through menopause, consuming caffeine can worsen hot flash and night sweat symptoms commonly associated with cessation of reproduction. However, for those on the brink of this health issue, the stimulant may help with memory and concentration.
"While these findings are preliminary, our study suggests that limiting caffeine intake may be useful for those postmenopausal women who have bothersome hot flashes and night sweats," said researcher Dr. Stephanie Faubion, director of the Women's Health Clinic at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., via Medical Xpress.
The findings are based on a Mayo Clinic poll of more than 1,800 menopausal women. Researchers questioned participants between 2005 and 2011, comparing responses between caffeine users and non-users.
As close to 85 percent of people in the United States regularly consume some form of caffeine on a daily basis, those dealing with menopausal symptoms can reduce problems associated with the health issue by staying active, maintaining a healthy weight and limiting caffeine intake.
"Menopause symptoms can be challenging, but there are many management strategies to try," Faubion concluded.
