Mr. Chen headed to the hospital when he started having a severe stomach ache, along with blood in his urine. During a medical visit, the 44-year-old Chinese resident discovered that he was actually a menstruating woman.
Doctors said they were shocked to learn of the news, after studying Chen under a full body examination. Besides having a penis, he also had a full set of female reproductive organs.
"He was wearing men's clothes with short hair, so we didn't think that he would be a female at the beginning," said a spokesman from the First People's Hospital of Yongkang, where Chen was treated, via the Daily Mail.
Chen was also without an Adam's apple and had genitals that were different from other men, according to hospital officials.
At the start of his visit, he was given a CT scan and told that he had a uterus and ovaries. Thoroughly confused doctors performed a chromosome examination that revealed Chen also had a pair of XX sex chromosomes; genetically speaking, this confirmed that he was a woman.
Though Chen said he had sexual intercourse with his wife of 10 years, doctors remain uncertain how this would be possible considering their findings.
Furthermore, they concluded that such medical cases are extremely rare. At this point, it is too late for Chen to receive medical treatment that could potentially reverse the abnormality.
However, a lump was later surgically removed from his adrenal glands.
