Imagine a perfume that smells better the more a person sweats. Scientists may have created just such a thing with a new perfume delivery system.
The new perfume delivery system releases more of its aroma when it comes into contact with moisture, which means that a person smells nicer when their sweat levels increase. The researchers created the system by tagging a raw fragrance into an ionic liquid (salt in the form of liquid), which has no smell. This perfumed ionic liquid releases its aroma when it comes into contact with water.
The perfume doesn't just smell nice, either. It also has the ability to remove the bad odors that come from sweat. The "thiol" compounds that are responsible for the bad odor found in sweat are attracted to the ionic liquid. They attach themselves to the liquid and thus lose their potency.
"This is an exciting breakthrough that uses newly discovered ionic liquid systems to release material in a controlled manner," said Nimal gunartne, one of the researchers, in a news release. "Not only does it have great commercial potential, and could be used in perfumes and cosmetic creams, but it could also be used in other areas of science, such as the slow release of certain substances of interest."
The new system could have commercial possibilities, giving companies a new way to develop products for the personal care market. Currently, scientists are working with a perfume development company in order to identify a number of product ideas that could eventually be sold in stores.
The findings are published in the journal Chemical Communications.
