Could green tea help prevent prostate cancer? The new findings will be presented June 1 at the 2015 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, revealing that it could help to aid in the prevention of the second most common type of cancer in older men.
For the study, researchers looked to see if a one-year intervention could suppress the risk of cancer development in 100 participants who had high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HGPIN) or atypical small acing proliferation (ASAP).
They used green tea capsules that contained a mixture of catching that predominantly contained Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) - otherwise known as the most abundant and potent catechin found responsible for cancer prevention effects at a dose of 200 mgs twice daily.
The group that used capsules predominantly containing EGCG was compared to the placebo tablet group over a one-year treatment period.
While the difference in prostate cancers was not statistically significant, they did notice that those who only had HGPIN at the beginning of the trail had a lower combined rate of ASAP and prostate cancer development with Polyophenon E.
