Some perfumes may be just as good or even better at warding away mosquitoes than some mosquito repellents, according to a recent study.
Researchers found that after studying an array of scents that came in different forms, the perfume Victoria's Secret Bombshell and Avon Skin So Soft bath oil were most effective at repelling mosquitoes for about two hours.
During the study, researchers compared eight insect repellents, two fragrances and a vitamin B patch in order to determine what worked best against mosquitoes.
To test out the repellents, researchers placed two different species of mosquitoes in a holding chamber at the bottom of a Y-shaped tube. While one prong of the Y led to a researcher's untreated hand, the other led to a hand coated with repellents. When released, the mosquitoes could chose which hand to fly to.
While the perfumes were high on the list when it came to repelling mosquitoes, DEET-free repellents did almost nothing, researchers say, which was also true of the vitamin B patch.
The study is published in the Journal of Insect Science.
