Porn, in many ways, can be harmful. As it turned out, however, it has bigger, even more harmful impacts on the environment and national security. It poses this thread in four ways:
Porn is an intellectual hazard
A German Study found that frequent porn-viewing could shrink certaini areas of the brain. Men who watch porn have less brain matter volume. It also affects neural responses in the reward matter of the brain, motivations, and memory receptors by getting them saturated with dopamine -- or happy chemical. The brain remembers this pleasure and wants to repeat it, leading to watching more pornography until the brain becomes accustomed that it desynthesizes the brain. This then leads to more hardcore porn to experience pleasure again.
So the pleasure sought in watching porn could lead to addiction, and porn addiction can cause brain damage. Who knew?
Porn is a cultural hazard
A study from the University of Amsterdam found that objectification was depicted for women in porn through instrumentality, while men were objectfied through dehumanization. Men were often shown being dominant and women submissive, and gender inequality is more apparent in amateur porn than in professional.
Women who watch porn are often doing so because men want them to, while men watch porn simply for the pleasure. Soon, they want to act out what is on screen, leading to addiction as previously discussed. This does two things: it makes men view women as sexual objects, and it leads women to think themselves as sexual objects because it's how men expect them to be.
Porn leads to narcissism
Being the epitome of self-satisfaction, The Federalist noted that the content and reason of watching porn speaks for itself -- the more addicted someone is to watching them, the more self-absorbed he or she becomes. The more one centers around satisfying one's personal needs, the more one objectifies human beings.
Porn discriminates against women
There are dfferent ways porn discriminates against women: it reduces them to their sexual organs, it depicts them as tools of pleasure, and at times, it shows and normalizes violence against women by hitting, spanking, spitting, grabbing, choking, and even rapint them. This then leads to equate consent to use and mistreat women; promotes, institutionalizes, and authorizes the dominator-submissive dynamic; and it legitimizes and glamorizes things such as humiliation and de-humanization. Most importantly, porn violates principles of equality and respect towards women.
In the ens, these altered societal views porn brings become cultural, spiritual, and environmental hazards -- it creates a society of false reality and produces and environmental wasteland by limiting intellectual, cultural, and spiritual resources that ultimately lead to terrorism.
And here we thought we're just watching harmless porn.
