China-based smartphone maker OnePlus is gearing up its marketing campaigns for the highly-anticipated OnePlus 3. It recently announced some of these interesting plans before it launched its newest flagship phones including giving away 30,000 OnePlus Loop VR headsets!
OnePlus has collaborated with VR specialists AntVR to build these headsets they are planning to gift to their avid consumers on a first-come-first-served basis, as stated in the company's website.
This is hardly a novel strategy by the company. Last year, it also gave away 30,000 Google Cardboard-style VR viewers so that more fans will be encouraged to tune in to the OnePlus 2's launching event.
Apparently, the company is stepping up their efforts to be one of the market leaders in the virtual reality world. Giving away $5 cardboard viewers was sweet, but a full-fledged Samsung Gear-style headset is really something else. The idea that there are only 30,000 pieces of this made makes them collectors' item as well.
The VR headset is compatible with almost all smartphone that are from 5 to 6 inches in screen size. Those who will get their hands to it can watch the OnePlus 3 unveil remotely in virtual reality! All they have to do is slide their smartphone inside the headset.
OnePlus cofounder Carl Pei is very excited for the upcoming event and the direction of the company in general. "We believe we, and the tech industry as a whole, have only scratched the surface of what can be done in VR, and there's much more immersive experiences to be had," said Pei. "Inspired by a certain fan video, we took to our imagination of where OnePlus would be decades from now, having moved our headquarters to space."
This so-called space headquarters is called "The Loop" and can be treated as a VR mall. Interested buyers can make their purchases on this virtual reality setting. The move is both interesting and logical. Because OnePlus does not have the budget that Samsung has when it comes to launching almost similar products, it had to keep things entirely virtual.
Not only is going completely virtual less expensive, it can make the fans take notice. It is worth noting that the company is really striving. The Loop VR headset will be just given away for marketing purposes and not even sold like the notable VR brands such as Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PlayStation VR, and Samsung Gear. Surely, some will find this worth having for free!
The launch of OnePlus 3 is yet to be announced.
