A budding Chinese startup is bound to release the first ever flexible smartphone can be worn like around the wrist like a regular bracelet. The smartphone is the brainchild of the new company called Moxi Group.
The smartphone is designed to function in two ways - worn around the wrist and stretched flat. It is primarily made from 'gaphene', an ultra-flexible and durable screen. As per the said group, it has already created its prototype.
The mass production is initially set for 100,000 units and will eventually be put on the market in the latter part of 2016. It is expected to be sold at $760 each unit. The company name 'Moxi' is pronounced as 'Mou-she', which is the Chinese term for 'graphene'.
Despite the near-perfect flexible phone, it still has an issue for now. The first set of flexible phones will only be equipped with black -and-white displays. Moxi is still in the process of creating this bendable phone in full colors. These newer versions are aimed to be released in 2018.
This will not be the first attempt for Moxi to produce flexible phones. Last year, it released other smartphone models using graphene. The top mobile phone manufacturing giants such as LG and Samsung have also embarked on the development of the smartphone made with flexible screens. LG has released its series of Flex phone while Samsung has developed phones with curved screens. However, Moxi has stated that the smartphones developed and released by their competitors do not come close to the innovation they are now offering.
The latest offering from Moxi is the giant step towards wearable technology with massive computing capabilities. On the other hand, the biggest challenge remains as to how companies such as Moxi would be able to release the products that the mass market can afford.
