Google Maps will be rolling out with several changes that include the addition of a data saving Wi-Fi mode and an option to turn on specific alerts for mass transit delays. The update on Google Maps will allow users to cut down on cellular data use while using the map app if it has been pre-downloaded before the Wi-Fi connection is turned off.
Most Google Maps users are reportedly using the additional mode found in the settings screen of Google Maps that replaces the "offline areas" toggle to "Wi-Fi only." A link in the description will allow users to switch between offline and Wi-Fi only modes. Google Maps users must be aware that by tapping the switch, Google maps will be cut-off from cellular data while tapping anywhere on the description will lead to the Google Maps offline areas configuration screen.
Google Maps users have also noticed the new mass transit delay notification. The second feature of the updated Google Maps may appeal to Google Maps users who rely on massed transit to get to work everyday. The Google Maps new update will allow Google Maps users to set up custom alerts to warn them when the usual trip to work is disrupted, Information Week reported.
Google Maps users can also subscribe to alerts for one or multiple lines, which can give them time to adjust their route to avoid trouble spots. However, no information about which metros are covered by Google Maps mass transit has been disclosed yet.
Meanwhile, Google Maps can turn to CityMapper for inspiration, Tech Crunch reported. CityMapper is another tool used for navigating around cities equipped with a powerful offline mode.
Google Maps has not announced either of the features. However, it appears that Google Maps on some Android devices have been updated with this change as Google Maps users reported.
