Do you know what is the newest color of Apple? It is not rose gold nor space gray, but, green. Apple Inc., the tech giant that brought us iPhone and Macbook, is now venturing to green energy.
Apple's newest subsidiary, Apple Energy gained its approval from the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last week. This simply means that Apple is now entitled to distribute and sell electricity from its $850 million investment to solar energy February of last year. Apple, together with other internet based companies, where scrutinized by several environmental organizations like Green Peace because of the power consumption of their data centers. According to US Department of Energy, data centers consumes energy that accounts almost 2 percent of the total power consumption of the nation.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said in an interview that Apple plans to go on 100 percent renewable energy. Aside from distributing electricity, Apple plans to convert all Apple stores to use clean energy. Apple also plans to build the new Apple Campus and the new Silicon Valley headquarters they call "Spaceship" fully running on renewable enegy.
It is also expected that future Apple product to follow the same principle to produce products with features that will lean towards the clean energy movement. Apple expects to save "hundreds of millions of dollars" after the full implementation of the project.
Apple is competing head on to Elon Musk's Tesla and Solar City in the green energy arena. However, Elon Musk said in an interview that he is open competition and even invited other companies to venture in the clean energy business. Aside from Apple and Tesla, other companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon also started investing on renewable energy.
There's a long way to go in terms of breaking away from our dependence to fossil fuel to power our cities. This step by Apple Inc. is a true testament of Apple's commitment to their slogan "Think different".
