U.S. Top Country for Plastic Surgery But Not Rhinoplasty

According to an international survey, the U.S. is rated no. 1 for plastic surgery procedures in the world.  Brazil makes a close second, with recent reports from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

Yet, if we break it down by population, we see that's not quite the case. South Korea, Greece and Italy perform 10 procedures per every 1,000 persons according to 2011 data from the Economist.

Studies show that statistically, the U.S. only accounts for a portion of procedures completed across the globe. 6.3 million surgeries and 8.3 million non-surgical procedures, ranging from Botox injections to laser hair removal and chemical peels, were performed by plastic surgeons throughout the world in 2011 alone. Only 21 percent or 3.1 million of those procedures were done in the U.S.

To examine the theory further, we looked at just exactly what procedures were being done where. Here's what we discovered.

While breast augmentation is the most common surgical procedure in the U.S., the top plastic surgery procedure performed around the world is lipoplasty, also known as fat removal, or liposuction.

As for rhinoplasty, or a nose job, the U.S. doesn't even rank in the top three. Those are most often done in China, Japan and Brazil.

Lastly, while the U.S. holds the most plastic surgeons, approximately 5,950 according to reports, Brazil comes in at a close second with 5,024. The United Kingdom, on the other hand, only has 450.

The information comes from the data of 996 plastic surgeons complied from The International Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures Performed in 2011.
