Sleep Apnea is a common sleep disorder in which one experiences one or more pauses while breathing. The breathing pauses may last from few seconds to minutes. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is causing a lot of health issues including improper sexual function, lack of intimacy and libido. Both men and women can suffer from such complications if left untreated.
Since the past few years, new studies have revealed that sleep apnea can affect the sexual life of a person in numerous ways. Lack of desire in having sex to erectile dysfunction, the consequences just doesn't stop here. It is estimated that nearly 30 million American men suffer from ED, reports CNN.
A research published by 'The Journal of Sexual Medicine' in 2011, reveals that women suffering from untreated sleep apnea are more prone to the risk of sexual difficulties. Another study conducted in the same year (2011), shows that disturbance in sleep caused by sleep apnea can affect the testosterone levels of both men and women. Testosterone is a hormone that arouses the sexual desire among both the genders.
Testosterone is produced highly during the night hours and early mornings. But sleep apnea can reduce the amount of sleep, thus affecting the production of testosterone. The low oxygen levels during the night time can affect the vascular system of heart, lungs, brain and penis.
Snoring is considered to be the third major cause of divorce among couples in The United States and Great Britain. Continuous snoring and frequent disturbance in sleep can cause a wreck in a relationship due to lack of rest. Studies have revealed that a poor sleep can have an adverse effect on marital relationships.
Sleep Apnea is powerful enough to leave a person with drowsy feeling and tiredness, which is not a good sign of happy sexual life. Apart from affecting the sexual life, sleep apnea can cause variations in blood pressure and weight, obesity, heart attack, stroke, and cancer.
If you are suffering from sleep apnea, it's high time to treat this marriage destroyer, before it's too late.
