A meteorite flew across the sky and exploded over central Russia on Friday, causing a shock wave that injured 1,200 people and destroyed buildings.

The governor of the Chelyabinsk district where the event took place has announced that an impact crater has been located about 50 miles west of the city. In addition, about 10,000 police officers are currently searching for meteorite debris.

No deaths were reported but the Emergencies Ministry said 20,000 rescue and clean-up workers were sent to the region after President Vladimir Putin told Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov to ease the disruption and help the victims.
