Blackberry on Tuesday launched its new Android-based phone, DTEK60. Surprisingly, Blackberry chose to price the phone cheaper than its competitors at $499.
BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer, Marty Beard said, "This one is our phone, This is fully our responsibility."
The Blackberry DTEK60 will be the last phone manufactured by Blackberry. All future phones will be outsourced for manufacturing as Blackberry will focus on the profitable business of software and managing mobile devices. The Blackberry DTEK60 saw several leaks in past few months and top it off there was a pre-release pre-order campaign in Canada.
Talking about BlackBerry DTEK60 specs, the smartphone features a 5.5-inch QHD panel, a Snapdragon 820 SoC with 4GB of RAM, 3,000mAh battery, and a USB Type-C port. In terms of looks, it features a metal-framed body with a dual-glass finish, on both front and rear. The DTEK 60 also comes with a fingerprint sensor.
Well, but Blackberry has always been known for its secure softwares for businesses. The DTEK60 booted an extra secure Android 6.0 Marshmallow along with secure bootloader. Blackberry's own apps such as Hub and Calendar are also present in the device.
"If you look at a feature by feature by feature, and you're looking at dimensions and weight and the display and the memory and the camera, the battery, it is a very strong comp to both those devices," Beard said, as reported in NDTV Gadgets.
Blackberry does not have any distribution deals with telecom companies, for the DTEK60. It is rather trying to sell it directly to governments and other large organizations. The phone is also available on the Blackberry website in the US, Canada, and Major European countries.
The previous DTEK50 saw a very limited demand and Blackberry wrote down $137 million of inventory and supply commitments. As reported in Economic Times.
With the BlackBerry DTEK60 featuring specs similar to the best phones available, it would be interesting to see how DTEK60 fairs. After all, it is the last phone by Blackberry.
