Ever since Kim Kardashian, celebrity spokesmodel, revealed that she lost the post-baby weight by following the low-carb Atkins diet, ketogenic dieting started trending among fitness freaks, models and even body builders.
What is Ketogenic Dieting
Scientists studied the metabolic pathways associated with weight gain and revealed that, once the body is denied of enough carbohydrates, it shifts its metabolic pathways toward burning fats and generating energy for body functions. When the liver starts breaking down fats, it produces ketones, which can be further metabolized to release energy. This physiological state is referred to as ketosis and is highly helpful in maintaining body functions even during starvation.
A recent study published in the Endocrine journal revealed that ketogenic dieting caused significant loss of visceral fat and reduced the burden of diseases associated with obesity.
Ketogenic dieting is somewhat similar to the Atkins diet plan, in which intake of 20-30 grams of carbs per day is recommended. Eating a balanced diet seldom diverts the body to ketosis mode. Ketogenic diet intentionally pushes the body to start utilizing fats instead of carbohydrates, which leads to immediate weight loss, according to a report published in thestar.com.
Atkins Diet Plans and Recipes
Atkins diet was highly popular in the 1990s and early 2000s, till it fell out of demand when Dr. Robert Atkins, the pioneer of Atkins diet, died of a heart attack in 2002. It was speculated that the fatty diet he was recommending and taking on his own was the cause of the heart attack.
These speculations were falsified recently, when research studies revealed that carbohydrates and sugars are the real culprits of obesity and cardiovascular complications, rather than the earlier believed saturated fatty acids. Currently, the Atkins diet is gaining back its popularity and more and more people are starting to follow the ketogenic dieting regimes initially recommended by Atkins.
