An ancient form of Chinese martial art, tai chi, is known to offer several health benefits.

This traditional practice is said to improve health and well being. This is a gentle way to reduce stress and anxiety. With the growing evidence of the health benefits gained from tai chi, several experts believe that this ancient Chinese slow moving exercise is an ideal way to remain fit and healthy.  This practice can offer benefits to people of various age groups.

"In this high-tech world that's all about speed, greed and instant gratification, tai chi is the antidote to bring us back to balanced health," said Arthur Rosenfeld, a tai chi master and the author of a new book called "Tai Chi - The Perfect Exercise: Finding Health, Happiness, Balance, and Strength" according to Counsel & Heal." The last time I looked, there were some 500 studies about the various physical benefits of tai chi, from improving balance and attention span to boosting the immune system to beating back the symptoms of arthritis, asthma and insomnia."

Jessica Mathews, a San Diego, California-based exercise physiologist, claims this practice is not very beneficial as it does not aid in the cardiovascular component. The exertion level while performing this gentle exercise does not increase the heart rate, reports Reuters.

On the other hand, a Hawaii-based personal fitness trainer Jordon Forth recommends this practice to everybody. He has been studying tai chi since 2006 and claims this to be the grand ultimate motion as it teaches people to move in various planes of motion, reports Reuters.

Rosenfeld believes that tai chi helps in creating a healthy balance for better living.

Other studies have shown that tai chi helps the elderly by preventing falls, developing cardiovascular fitness and enhancing their well being.

A survey conducted by National Health Interview Survey in 2007 shows that an estimated 2.3 million U.S. adults had used tai chi in the past 12 months.
