Dunkin' Donuts: Company Ditches the Gluten for Two New Products

For health nuts and vegans alike, Dunkin' Donuts may have just the treat for you. The company is allegedly going to be selling two gluten-free tasty treats by as early as the end of the year in the flavors of cinnamon-sugar doughnuts and blueberry muffins.
"At Dunkin' Donuts, we recognize the importance of providing our guests with many options, including alternative choices for people with food and dietary restrictions," said Michelle King, spokeswoman for Dunkin' Brands, via The Los Angeles Times. "We understand that sensitivities to food ingredients such as gluten are a serious concern for certain guests."
For those with Celiac disease, an inherited autoimmune disorder where gluten must be avoided, they'll have the chance to enjoy pastries from a popular chain without having to replicate a similar recipe, minus gluten, of course, at home.
As gluten is a kind of protein typically found in foods such as bread, crackers and pasta, those with Celiac disease cannot handle the compound as it harms their immune system and small intestines, preventing the absorption of nutrients.
Statistics show that the disease affects as many as 1 in 133 in the United States alone, and without treatment, can lead to iron deficiency, osteoporosis, an increased risk of Lymphoma, and slowed growth and weakened bones in children.
However, there are many health groups and popular food chains who are jumping on the bandwagon to offer similar foods minus the gluten. And, mind you, it's even become a chosen lifestyle among several celebrities. (Gwyneth Paltrow, anyone?)
In fact, she loves the diet so much, she even wrote a book about it, titled "It's All Good."
