Researchers believe a new type of cat with poodle-like features may be making its way to pet stores.
According to The Cat Franciers' Association, back in 1987, a feral cat in Montana who gave birth to a litter of five kittens noticed one a bit different from the pack.
One seemed to have thick, curly hair. Persian breeder Jeri Newman allegedly adopted the kitten and named her "Miss DePasto," according to the CFA, after the curly-haired character in the television show "Moonlighting."
Yet, 25 years later, researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna believe that this feline started a genetically distinct breed with curly hair and fur.
The breed, referred to as Selkirk Rex, is the fourth type of cat to sprout a curly mane. However, it's particularly distinct among other Rex breeds as its hair is of normal length and it isn't prone to balding.
These cats can sometimes be crossed with Persians or British short-hairs who are quite compatible with the breed.
Sometimes referred to as "a cat in sheep's clothing" by geneticists, these guys fur can also come in a variety of colors, ranging from black, to orange, white or even gray. However, this cat isn't recommended for those with dander or dust allergies, and especially for those who may be allergic to cats.
Though the breed has only recently been confirmed, the Selkirk Rex has been officialy recognized as a cat breed by the International Cat Association since 1992, the American Cat Fanciers Association since 1998 and the Cat Fanciers' Association since 2000.
