A recent report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled over 2 million dehumidifiers due to a potential fire hazard in the United States and 52,500 in Canada. According to the commission, the products can allegedly overhead, smoke or even catch fire with use.
The organization notes that the product has been linked to 46 fires and more than $2 million in property damages, all of which were manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances but may also carry a variety of brand names, including Danby, De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time as a result of fires created by the dehumidifiers, which were sold nationwide at such major retailers as Home Depot, Kmart and Lowes between January 2005 and August.
The organization's website adds the following regarding the recall: "This recall involves 20, 25, 30, 40, 45, 50, 65 and 70-pint dehumidifiers with brand names Danby, De'Longhi, Fedders, Fellini, Frigidaire, Gree, Kenmore, Norpole, Premiere, Seabreeze, SoleusAir and SuperClima. Recalled model numbers and date codes are listed below. The brand name and the pint capacity are printed on the front of the dehumidifier. The model number and date code are printed on a sticker on the back, front or side of the unit. The dehumidifiers are white, beige, gray or black plastic and measure between 19 and 24 inches tall, 13 and 15 inches wide, and 9 and 11 inches deep."
If you or someone you know has this product, the organization recommends that it is immediately turned off and unplugged. It's also advised to contact Gree for a full refund at 866-853-2802. For more information regarding the recall, click here.
