Viagra is a powerful thing. So powerful that it can give elderly men lasting erections to fill their partner's desires. That's all fine and dandy, of course, but it's some who overdose on erectile dysfunction medications that might give light blue pills like this one, a bad reputation.
According to La Nacion newspaper, a 66-year-old Colombian man who was trying to impress his new girlfriend with a throbbing erection came to a raging halt when doctors told this patient that he would need to have his privates amputated.
After the man reportedly intentionally overdosed on Viagra to impress his beloved, he experienced a constant state of erection for several days, according to the paper.
As the man waited days to seek medical attention for his erection, doctors found that his penis was inflamed, fractured and showed signs of gangrene. In order to stop the gangrene from spreading to the rest of his body, the doctors said they would be forced to amputate the man's penis.
"The patient had bruising in the testicles and penis, was treated and is recovering well," Dr Antonio Correa said, via the news organization.
We're glad that this man will be leaving the hospital alive. Yet serious medical problems of any kind could have been prevented.
It's important to take certain safety precautions when taking various erectile dysfunction (ED) medications. For instance, if you are taking nitrates, often prescribed for chest pain, it is not recommended to take Viagra, as a sudden drop in blood pressure can cause unsafe conditions.
It's important to discuss general health safety with your doctor and make sure and check if your body is healthy enough for sex in order to avoid long-term injury. And if you experience an erection lasting longer than 4-hours, it's important to seek immediate medical attention.
And of course, don't overdose on erectile dysfunction medications. It's not written right there on the label but it's certainly common sense. And in the end, it might just be better to have a flacid penis.
