Various fat-burning supplements have been linked to acute hepatitis and liver failure in 29 people in Hawaii. OxyElite Pro is the company allegedly responsible for supplying these weight loss and muscle building supplements.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration note along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention via the Hawaii Department of Health that an investigation has started in order to determine whether incidents are also being reported outside the state.

"OxyElite Pro is distributed by USPlabs LLC of Dallas, Texas, and is sold nation-wide through a wide range of distribution channels, including the Internet and retail stores that sell dietary supplements," the FDA said, via a recent statement.

The date of the first reported illness started in the summer of 2013.

According to the CDC's Health Advisory, "Of the 29 identified patients, 24 (83 percent) reported using OxyELITE Pro during the 60 days prior to illness onset. There was no other dietary supplement or medication use reported in common by more than two patients."

Symptoms that can occur from hepatitis range from loss of appetite, light-colored stools, dark urine and even jaundice depending on the severity of the problem, according to the CDC.

"The department continues to urge people who use dietary or nutritional supplements for weight loss and/or muscle gain to talk with their doctor or health care provider," said the DOH in a news release. "Anyone who develops symptoms such as abdominal pain or discomfort, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea and /or vomiting, and yellow skin or eyes, should consult their doctor immediately."
