Is Monday the Best Day to Quit Smoking?
A recent study shows that Monday is the best day to quit smoking.
According to a group of researchers from the Monday Campaigns, a non-profit health initiative associated with John Hopkins observed that a number of visitors hit the government website Smokefree.gov on Mondays. The website, which is supported by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health, and National Cancer Institute that offers professional and social guidance, helps people who want to quit smoking.
Researchers also analyzed Google searches for terms including "quit smoking help" in up to six different languages, including the following: Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian. Most searchers about quitting showed a preference for Monday from 2008 to 2012.
In fact, on average, there were 25 percent more quit-smoking searchers on Mondays than on other days.
Research director for the Monday campaigns, Morgan Johnson, explained the possible link between Mondays and quitting smoking.
The findings of the study could benefit health advocates who would like to provide more effective marketing strategies and campaigns that could help convince individuals to give up the habit.
As many smokers may plan on quitting during New Year's Day or their birthdays, the new study advocates an opportunity to tell people that they don't need to wait for another year to pass in order to kick the habit.
"We always tell smokers that when they slip, it's not a failure, it's just part of the process," said Tom Glynn, the senior director of cancer science and trends at the American Cancer Society in Atlanta, via USA Today.
