Frenchman Successfully Fitted with Artificial Heart
Thanks to science, a 75-year-old Frenchman has been fitted with a new life by becoming the first person ever to be receive an artificial heart that's made by the French biomedical company Carmart.
"He is awake, feeding himself and talking with his family. We are thinking of getting him up on his feet soon, probably as early as this weekend," Professor Daniel Duveau, who saw the patient on Thursday, told Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.
We are delighted with this first implant, although it is premature to draw conclusions given that a single implant has been performed and that we are in the early postoperative phase," Reuters adds.
This product in particular is designed to help replace a real heart over long periods of time, instead of a heart-assistant device that has typically been used as a temporary solution during previous decades.
According to Reuters, the artificial heart can beat up to five years and has been successfully tested on animals before the transplant took place in a Paris hospital on December 18th.
With the successful surgery, three more patients in France are now scheduled to be fitted with this device.
Candidates for the device are those that suffer from terminal heart failure, according to the news organization. This means that their heart no longer holds the capacity to pump enough blood to sustain the body, and thus, would result in death without medical assitance within weeks.
