84-Year-Old Woman Found with 44-Year-Old Fetus Inside Her

When an 84-year-old Brazilian woman was sent to the hospital complaining of stomach pains, doctors found what's believed to be a 44-year-old calcified fetus insider her body.

According to medical officials at a hospital in the Tocantins state in central Brazil, an X-ray of the woman's stomach showed a "stone baby," with "the face, the bones of the arms, of the legs, the ribs, and the spine" of the fetus was noticed. Doctors say the fetus died between 20 and 28 weeks."

"Her stomach didn't grow any more, the baby stopped moving and she thought it had been aborted," said Porto Nacional hospital gynecologist Gesneria Saraiva Kratka, via Opposing Views. "It's supernatural, but she has not had any complications," Kratka said. "We are going to perform some new tests, scans to see more details and then we will speak with her relatives to see if they allow us to operate."

Officials believe that after the fetus died, it was not properly expelled by the woman's body. In these cases, the body will usually cover the fetus in calcium to protect the body from the fetal corpse.

The woman does not allegedly want the baby removed from her body.

A similar case occurred within the last year involving calcified fetuses-medically referred to as lithopedion-in Colombia.
