The acclaimed "Ghostbusters" star Harold Ramis has died. He was 69 years old.

The actor and writer was most notably known for his off-screen work writing "Ghostbusters" films, along with "Analyze This" and "Groundhog Day," allegedly died from a rare autoimmune disease that causes a severe swelling of the blood vessels. He died of early complications from the disease, known as autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis, according to the Chicago Tribune.

This systemic illness can lead to occlusion of blood vessels that create subsequent ischemia in the organs and in the tissues, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Symptoms of the disease may include the type and location of the nerve fiber involved, which may cause sensory and motor dysfunction, pain, numbness and weakness via the muscles in the limbs.

When creating the proper diagnosis, researchers will often base their decision on clinical examination, history and supporting laboratory results that could potentially include an electromyography along with nerve studies.

Treatment for the issue often involves the use of corticosteroids. However, health officials note that over long periods of time, this can create new complications.

Ramis was with family in his Chicago home during the time of his death, according to ABC News. The complications from the condition had grown so bad that in the past, he had to relearn to walk.

"His creativity, compassion, intelligence, humor and spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved him," read a press release from his agency.

Ramis is survived by his wife Erica, sons Julian and Daniel, daughter Violet and two grandchildren.
