Love and Online Dating: Are you too Attractive to Snag a Date?
Looking for love can be tough. And for many of us, we may have turned to online options in order to find 'the one.' Yet new research shows that if you're advertising yourself online in the hopes of meeting a romantic partner and having relatively little luck, it's possible that you may be too attractive to, well, attract a mate.
In fact, researchers found that having an uglier profile picture could potentially increase your risk of finding someone new in the online realm.
The study, conducted by the dating site OkCupid, showed that universally beautiful individuals tend to receive lower scores in terms of attractiveness when compared to those who might exhibit more unique or interesting features.
"The people sending these messages are thinking about their own chances," said Hannah Fry of Youtube Channel Head Squeeze, according to The Daily Mail. "[If you're ugly] it means they can have less competition....why bother humiliating themselves?"
But wait. There's more. According to a blog that discusses OKCupid, another theory pushes on the ideas of perception and attraction. In other words, it's all about consistency.
"The less-messaged woman was usually considered consistently attractive, while the more-messaged woman often created variation in male opinion," researchers wrote, via the blog.
