Costco Recall: Freeze-Dried Fruit Snacks may have Salmonella

Costco recently recalled 59,780 cases of Kirkland Signature Real Sliced Fruit due to possible Salmonella contamination. According to an FDA News release, those who may have purchased the product were contacted by phone and letter that it would no longer be available on shelves.

T"Oregon Freeze Dry is committed to the families who enjoy our products every day. We employ a rigorous and robust product-testing regimen. We have taken this precautionary step because of our commitment to these values. If you have this specific product, please do not consume it. Return it immediately to your local Costco for a full refund," the letter notes, via the release.

Fortunately, there have been no reported illnesses at this time.

This freeze-dried sliced fruit is sold in red and white cases that contain 20 pouches of the product. The best by date (found in the upper left corner) are between Feb. 14, 2012 and March 11, 2015. Anyone with these products is urged to return them immediately due to possible contamination.

The fruit was sold in Costco Wholesale stores located in "Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico," according to the release.

"The recalled products may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain."
