Rare Conjoined Twins Share Only One Body (Video)

A mother from Northern India recently gave birth in a very rare case to conjoined twins. For these two, unlike typical cases, the twins share only one body despite having two heads, necks and spines.

"Yes this report is perfectly true that we have delivered a female baby having two heads," said Dr. Ashish Sehgal, the CEO of Cygnus JK Hindu Hospital located in Sonipat, Haryana, according to ABC News.

As 28-year-old woman, Urmila Sharma, did not have the funds to get an ultrasound at the beginning of her pregnancy, she was shocked to find that she was expecting conjoined twins.

"We only came to know she was carrying conjoined twins after an ultrasound two weeks ago but it was too late to do anything by then," said Dr. Shikha Malik, who delivered the baby via Cesarean section, via the HuffPost.

Unfortunately, according to Dr. Sehgal, the likelihood of the girls' survival rate is extremely low as the need to share both vital organs will mostly likely prevent any separation surgery that can be performed for a healthier life. The girls sharing the same vital organs will also be very taxing on them, with the babies only weighing in at five pounds and three ounces.

However, Dr. Sehgal notes that the twins still have the potential to undergo a very "meticulous and challenging" procedure that could potentially save their lives. Yet they are not stable enough at this time for surgery and only time will tell if this will ever be possible.
