Fat or Fit? Where does your City Fall in the United States
Just how fit is your city? A new Gallup study reveals where your home falls in the United States.
The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index survey looked at a random sample of 531,630 adults between the ages of 18 and older in 2012 and 2013.
"[The study] is part of a call to action," said Dan Witters, research director of Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, via a press release. "It's increasing public awareness around this."
Findings showed that Boulder, Colo., tops the charts as the slimmest city in the country. In fact, the obesity meter is so low that it ranks in at 12.4 percent. This city has also held the same spot as the most svelte U.S. metropolis since 2008, with the exception of 2009.
For the most obese city, southeast Huntington, West Virginia takes the cake. Unfortunately but not too surprisingly, two other cities in the state also made the top 10 list as some of the most unhealthy. The city comes in with a staggering obesity rate of 39.5 percent, followed by McAllen-Edinburg-Mission in Texas, at an obesity rate of 38.3 percent.
Other major cities varied a great deal depending on the area. For instance, Memphis, Tenn., has an obesity rate of 31.9 percent, while Denver-Aurora, Colo., came in at 19.3 percent.
Though some cities and states in general are doing better than others, the study shows, overall, that the country needs to get in better shape.
"Rising obesity rates have significant health consequences for both individuals and communities of all sizes," said Janna Lacatell, Healthways Lifestyle Solutions Director, via an interview with Gallup. "In order to combat the trend and encourage individuals to make healthier choices, community-based policy and environmental approaches can, and should, be used."
