Could Google Glass Help Patients with Parkinson's Disease?
Just as Google Glass goes on sale for one-day, April 15, a recent study suggests that the device could aid Parkinson's patients with mobility issues and monitoring their symptoms.
According to researchers from Newcastle University in Newcastle, England, Parkinson's patients involved in a small study were given Google Glass to use at home.
For Lynn Tearse, 50, who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2008, hand-tremors often made it difficult for her to use a phone and other devices. Yet using Google Glass made it much more simple.
"It's like working a mobile phone with boxes gloves on," said Tearse, via ABC News. "[Google Glass] was something I was genuinely interested in...You can take a photograph and take a video and search the Internet. You can make a call and send a text."
The tremors that come with this neurological disorder often make touchscreens difficult to use. Google Glass may provide a hand-free solution to many dealing with symptoms of the health problem.
This progressive neurodegenerative disorder is estimated to affect over 60,000 Americans and 10 million individuals worldwide. As the majority of patients diagnosed usually encounter Parkinson's-related symptoms by age 50, medication can help with certain issues, but may also exacerbate tremors.
Findings show how the device could potentially help with "freezing," a symptom that may cause patients' legs to become rigid with the need to regain optical focus. As some carry laser pointers in the chance that this symptom may occur, researchers note that Google Glass could aid in stopping these and other related issues.
"It allows people to remain in control of their lives and have confidence to go out on their own," Tearse said, adding that she hopes to purchase the device in the near future. "If you can sync your Google glass with your computer at home, it can be streamed through to a loved one at home. Keep an eye on and make you feel reassured."
