A latest study says that generally 2 to 3 percent of the population suffers from hyperhidrosis or uncontrolled sweating, which affects them both physically and emotionally.

Sweating, the release of salty liquid from the body's sweat glands, is an essential function that helps one cool down during physical exertion or from warm environmental conditions. But some people sweat profusely and often face embarrassment and discomfort. This uncontrolled and excessive production of sweat is called hyperhidrosis and affects 2-3 percent of the general population.

According to the new study,  hyperhidrosis is known to occur in a person's hands, feet and underarms.

"Commonly, there is no particular cause found, and this is called primary hyperhidrosis. There is a subset of individuals with hyperhidrosis that is caused by other conditions such as medications, cancers, metabolic and hormonal imbalances, infections and nerve injury. These individuals have secondary hyperhidrosis," according to William W. Huang, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor of dermatology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

To deal with this condition, the researchers suggest that people with hyperhidrosis should try and focus on their diet by avoiding fatty foods, oils and smelly foods like onions, garlic and curry that can enter the pores. Also one should cut down on coffee, tea and soft drinks as they stimulate the sweat glands. People with uncontrolled sweating should opt for natural fiber clothing and make sure to wash the clothes after every use. Especially in summers, stay hydrated. Above all make sure to seek proper medical attention.

The first step in tackling this condition is to start using an over the counter antiperspirant that has aluminium chloride as it helps in closing the sweat glands. A technique called iontophoresis is also used. The final resort is surgery called sympathectomise,  which one can opt for in severe and treatment resistant cases.

"Any treatment or procedure has its own potential risks and benefits and should be discussed thoroughly with a qualified heath care provider," Huang said. "My recommendation for patients with this condition and other conditions that can cause embarrassment is to realize you are not alone in dealing with this and should seek help from their doctor."
