Earlier this week, authorities at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden welcomed the arrival of a female giraffe calf.

Soon after announcing the arrival of its new member, the zoo officials organized a public naming contest for the newborn. It invited the public to suggest names via Facebook and Twitter,

The zoo recently disclosed that the four-day old female giraffe has an official name 'Nasha'. The zoo received more than 7,000 entries suggesting names for the young calf, among which four top names were selected and the public was again asked to choose from the four names that included 'Akila', 'Alia', 'Amaya' and 'Nasha'.

Nasha was finally selected as the official name as it got a majority of votes i.e. 32 percent.  Nasha is a Maasai word that means 'one who comes with the rains'.

Nasha was born on April 28, and as the name suggests, there was plenty of rains on that day. Born to 7-year-old mother Tessa, Nasha was born on Monday morning and her birthing was featured live on Twitter.

This is the second time that the zoo authorities have live-tweeted the birth of a calf, which includes photos and regular updates. (@CincinnatiZoo)

Nasha is the third calf born to Tessa. Mom Tessa and dad Kimba have been housed at the Cincinnati Zoo since 2008. Nash has older siblings; Lulu born in 2012 and Zuri born in 2011. But unfortunately Zuri was euthanized as she broke her leg when she was 7 weeks old, according to Washington Post.

According to the zoo authorities, the healthy 154 pound female calf is bonding well with her mother at the indoor stall  in Giraffe Ridge.

The curious visitors can have a look at the family through windows, and the duo will make a public appearance in the coming weeks.
