Indian School Boy Brutally Bullied for Abnormally Large Hands
Eight-year-old Mohammad Kaleem is like other boys his age in India, despite one quite noticeable difference: he has abnormally large hands.
This hadn't been much of a problem for Kaleem, according to his family, until he was asked to leave school because of insurmountable bullying.
"I do not go to school because the teacher says other kids are scared of my hands," he said, via the Huffington Post.
"Many of them used to bully me for my deformity. They would say 'let's beat up the kid with the large hands'. Some of them have actually beaten me and would go after me often."
As it stands, each of Kaleem's hands weigh about 17 pounds and stretch out a little over a foot long from his wrist. One can imagine that this makes it quite complicated for Kaleem to do everyday activities, including tying his shoes.
Though Kaleem's parents said they were aware of the problem at birth, their small means prevented them from finding adequate help for their son's escalating medical problem.
"When Kaleem was born his hand was twice the size of a normal baby's," said his mother, Haleema, 27. "His hands were big and his fingers were long. Initially his fists were small but they began to grow large as well and his fingers also kept growing."
Fortunately doctors believe that Kaleem may be suffering from lymphangioma or hamartoma-which are both treatable conditions. However, Dr. Krishan Chugh, head of pediatrics at the state-of-the-art Fortis Memorial Research Institute in Gurgaon, near Dehli, adds that Kaleem's case is very rare.
