Finding "the one" throughout our everyday lives can be quite challenging when dating may be the last thing on our minds, next to work, groceries and bills.

Now, in a society of ever-advancing technology, many are looking for love online. Unfortunately, recent findings show that many are still reluctant to look for "love" outside their own cultural background.

"An individual can't really control who turns them on," said Christian Rudder, co-founder and chief executive of the online dating site, via the Daily Mail. "I do think the fact that race is a sexual factor for so many and in such a consistent way, raises deeper questions."

While Rudder added that the findings do not indicate that users are racist, they did find some preferences among some people. For instance, researchers found that black men preferred Hispanic women and both Asian and Hispanic women preferred white men to others of their own ethnicity.

Men, overall, seemed to prefer younger women. Women, on the other hand, seemed to prefer men closer to their own age.

However, in the end, romantic compatibility seemed to be more determined on what people had in common than the color of their skin. For instance, asking questions like 'do you like scary movies?' and 'have you ever travelled alone to another country?' were the same for over three quarters of the matched couples on OkCupid, suggesting that far from being written in the stars, romantic success is more down to day-to-day compatibility.
