Is An All-Vegan Diet Right For Your Baby?
Florida mother Sarah Markham has regained custody of her newborn.
On Wednesday, a Seminole County, Florida judge told Markham that she would get custody of her son Caleb on the grounds that she started visiting a nutritionist for the child within 10 days of the report. The baby had lost 10 percent of his body weight when his mother had him on an all-vegan diet.
"There's no case, there's no abuse, there's no neglect - there's simply a doctor who has been challenged by a mother, and he didn't like it," said Bo Markham, Caleb's grandfather, via AJC.com.
Markham had been arrested back in June when her son was just 2 weeks old on the grounds that her doctor said Caleb was failing to thrive and needed hospital assistance.
During this time, Caleb stayed with his grandparents. Her five-month-old son now weighs 17 pounds. However, they are still giving him a vegan diet and will continue to do so.
"He's still on a soy formula - he's been on it, he likes it, he's doing well," Markham said, via AJC.com. "He's growing healthy, and I can't ask for anything more."
A 2001 study conducted by The American Dietic Association and The American Academy of Pediatrics states that vegan diets can promote normal infant growth. However, the question remains if children would always be getting enough nutrients from a vegan diet.
