Statistics show that seasonal affective disorder is estimated to affect 10 million Americans--a type of seasonal depression that's typically more common during the winter months when there's less sunlight. For those living in places like Denmark, residents are likely to be even more effected by colder days and longer nights.

Designer and one of the three founders of the new lighting company Sunn saw firsthand how seasonal affective disorder had a huge impact on his life when he was studying abroad in the country a few years back. That's why he and other researchers came up with a smart lamp that's designed to help ward off the winter blues.

Doctor's typically recommend treating seasonal depression with a bout of light therapy, which can range from microwave-sized lights to various lamps that blast white light into a patient's face for a certain period of time. These lights are, of course, supposed to represent some version of the sun.
That's why Minor and crew came up with this new light fixture that actually mimics the daily ebb and flow of the sun.

"The idea is that with our light mimicking natural sunlight, we're putting people more in tune with the natural rhythms of natural light," said Andrew Vaslas, Sunn's CTO, via Wired. "The way that that light changes-specifically the quality and color of the light-informs our internal body clocks."

The lamp is also geared to be taken anywhere around the world, based on cue custom algorithms that are based on LED lights housed inside the fixture.

Furthermore, researchers have also found that it just might help you get a better night's rest.
