New Technology Allows Blind Mother to See Her Newborn Baby for the First Time (VIDEO)
Some new technology may be changing the lives of the blind. A woman and new mother was able to see her newborn baby for the very first time using eSight Glasses.
The mother is 29-year-old Kathy Beitz, who started losing her sight in grace school, according to Fox News. She has what is known as Stargardt disease, a genetic condition that causes macular degeneration. In Beitz's case, a blind spot takes up most of her vision.
Now, though, the new glasses are allowing Beitz to see, despite her condition. She was loaned a pair of the glasses by the eSight corporation so that she could see her son on the day he was born, according to The Examiner.
The specialized glasses, which cost about $15,000, use an "Integrated Technology System." Essentially, the device enhances images to the eye by delivering more information to the cells.
For Beitz, it's a chance to see her son-a life-changing experience, for her.
"I remember his little mouth and his gums and his itsy-bitsy tongue when he would cry," said Beitz. "I would have had to imagine what he looked like, and I'm doing that, but it's a little bit heartbreaking having to do that for your own baby."
With the glasses, Beitz can read labels, bedtime stories and better care for her baby. It's certainly a life-changing technology, though it does carry a hefty price tag. Currently, eSight holds fundraises to provide their product to those in need.
