Super Bowl Sunday has become a great American tradition. However, this can oftentimes be a chance for many sports-lovers to overindulge on favorite snacks, whether that's too many Doritos or another one too many beers.

In fact, statistics show that during the week of the Super Bowl, the amount of household food items purchased adds up to more than 6,000 calories. In other words, researchers at Cornell University found that many Americans will eat more than that amount by the end of the day.

The study also showed that this time of the year represents one of the largest number of calories for any week and is even up there with certain holidays. In fact, the second unhealthiest week when people purchase an estimated 5,500 calories per serving a week is a week before the sports event, when many are planning ahead for the big game.

"The higher number represents the fact that the household was buying foods that give more calories each time they eat a recommended serving," the study's coauthor David Just, a professor of Behavioral Economics, told The Washington Post. "This means people buy the highest calorie foods around the Super Bowl."

This can certainly put a damper on any weight-loss New Year's resolutions. The key, of course, is everything in moderation. Using healthier alternatives to make snacks and meals can also help to cut down on calories. Lastly, counting drinks is also a good idea for weight and for safety.

More information regarding the findings can be seen via the journal PLOS ONE.
