Get More Sleep! You Might Need It For A Good Sex Life, Study Says
To get any job "done" you need a good night's sleep beforehand. And a new study validates that with a good night's rest, you're also more likely to sexually please your partner.
"The influence of sleep on sexual desire and arousal has received little attention in the field, but these findings indicate that insufficient sleep can decrease sexual desire and arousal for women," Dr. David Kalmbach, lead author and resident at the University of Michigan Medical School, said in a statement. "I think the take-home message should not be that more sleep is better, but that it is important to allow ourselves to obtain the sleep that our mind and body needs."
Researchers recruited 171 women who completed surveys that tracked their sleeping habits over the course of 14 days. They assessed how much sleep each participant received on a given night, along with their sexual desire and how they felt the following day. Participants were also asked if they pleasured themselves if their partner was dealing with low sexual desire.
Findings revealed that with each additional hour of sleep women got a night, this increased their likelihood of having sex with their partner by 14 percent. Women were also more likely to enjoy sex when compared to women who got fewer hours of sleep or who slept longer each night. Similarly, they reported fewer problems with genital arousal.
However, researchers reiterated that more studies will be needed in order to determine the connection between sleep and arousal.
"Some previous studies have hypothesized that sleep can affect hormone levels, which may cause changes in desire and arousal," he concluded. "But I think overall, more research is needed in this area to identify the underlying mechanisms more confidently."
More information regarding the findings can be seen via the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
