Amy's Kitchen And Wegmans Announce Recall: Possible Listeria Contamination
Two companies have announced on Monday that they are recalling frozen food products that contained spinach over fears that they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes that could sicken consumers.
Wegmans Food Markets and Amy's Kitchen, a natural and organ brand, both announced recalls.
A release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shows that close to 74,000 cases of Amy's Kitchen organic frozen meals containing spinach have now been voluntarily recalled following an organic supplier notification.
"This recall is based on a recall notice from one of Amy's organic spinach suppliers that Amy's may have received organic spinach with the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes," the company noted, according to the release.
Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can create a serious and potentially fatal infection in frail or elderly adults or individuals with a weakened immune system, can result in significant health issues.
Health officials warn that while short-term symptoms of infection can lead to fever, headache, stiffness, abdominal pain or vomiting, long-term symptoms can result in fertility issues among pregnant women as well--including miscarriages or even still birth.
Fortunately, Amy's has not received any reported illnesses at this time from the affected products, ranging from spinach pizza to tofu vegetable lasagna.
"Amy's Kitchen is not aware of any illness complaints to date related to the recalled products identified in Attachment A. Out of an abundance of caution, however, Amy's Kitchen is recalling these products based on the recall notice we received from our supplier," a statement on the FDA website reads.
Consumers who purchased the affected products have been advised to return them to receive a full refund. Stores that carry the company's products include places such as Lucky, Whole Foods, Safeway and Albertson's. A full list of the affected items can be seen via the FDA approved website.
Wegman's also announced a recall for 12,000 packages of Wegmans Organic Food You Feel Good About Just Picked Frozen Spinach in 12 oz packages, sold between Jan. 27 and March 21 with the following codes, also prompted by potential Listeria concerns:
BEST USED BY JAN. 26 2017 50265
BEST USED BY FEB. 02 2017 50335
Eighty-five stores are believed to have been affected in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virgnia, Maryland and Massachusetts.
