Suicide Prevention Month Starts In September: Here's How You Can Help
September is National Suicide Prevention month, so it's important to know the signs associated with suicide.
The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that nearly 3,000 people on average commit suicide daily, with rates at an all time high for veterans. The organization also notes that one million people die by suicide each year. In addition, for every person who commits suicide, 20 or more others attempt to end their lives, according to Every Day Matters.
Knowing the warning signs of suicidal tendencies can help to prevent future problems. Some warning signs may include talking about suicide, feelings of being trapped, feelings of hopelessness, withdrawal, etc. Other signs may also include changes in eating or sleeping patterns as well as changes seen in an increase in the use of alcohol or drugs.
As World Suicide Prevention Day first began back in 2003, starting on Sept. 10th, some things you can do to help raise awareness including the following, courtesy of Every Day Matters:
Raise awareness that suicide is preventable
Improve education about suicide
Spread information about suicide awareness
Decrease stigmatization regarding suicide
