Neurology: Valproic Acid Helps Control Epileptic Seizures
New findings published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation reveal a mechanism by which valproic acid controls epileptic seizures. By this, researchers have further identified the underlying factors of just what causes the health issues, according to a news release.
In this recent study, a team of UCI researchers uncovered that during seizures, the M-current that's mediated through cellular potassium channels and that's important for proper firing of neuronal signals, is surprised, contributing to neuronal hyperxcitability. Furthermore, the underlying factor contributes to an understanding of seizures that points to the creation of new, more effective drugs that may carry fewer side effects.
Previous studies have shown how valproic acid is widely used to treat various types of seizure disorders. However, the point is that the cellular mechanism affected by its anticonvulsant proprieties is not completely understood at this time. Furthermore, is also used to treat manic episodes related to bipolar disorder (manic depression) and to prevent migraine headaches, but the drug is linked to liver damage, birth defects and psychiatric side-effects.
