Facial Reconstruction Operation Leaves No Scar
Medical officials have conducted the first scar-free facial reconstruction procedure.
The eight-hour operation of an adult patient was completed via virtual surgery and 3D models. Researchers removed a vascularized piece of pelvic bone that was reshaped to adapt to the rest of the face before transplant was completed through the inside of the mouth, with no scars left.
The surgery was led by Daniel Borsuk, a doctor at Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont and a professor at the University of Montreal. The hospital in which the surgery took place is part of the CIUSS de l'Est-de-l'île-de-Montréal health network.
"The operation, during which the latest technologies were applied to reconstructive plastic surgery, sends a real message of hope to anyone who feels they must simply live with this type of disfigurement and who often feels so self-conscious that they isolate themselves," explained Dr. Borsuk, in a news release.
