Second Largest Diamond Found In Botswana, Biggest In A Century
One of the largest diamonds of the century was discovered in Botswana, in a Lucara Karowe mine. The newly found diamond is 1,111 carats and is the second largest diamond to be found, after the Cullinan diamond was found in South Africa.
"The significance of the recovery of a gem quality stone larger than 1,000 carats, the largest for more than a century....cannot be overstated," William Lamb, Lucara's CEO, said in a news release. "This historic diamond recovery puts Lucara and the Karowe mine amongst a select number of truly exceptional diamond producers."
The value for the diamond has yet been evaluated, but it is expected to probably be one of the most expensive diamonds. This is the world's second largest high quality diamond that has been found, and it was discovered using a newly installed Large Diamond Recovery ("LDR") XRT machines, according to a Lucara report. The diamond's measurements are approximately 65mm x 56mm x 40mm, making it about the size of a tennis ball.
Botswana is the second-largest diamond producing country in the world and this is biggest diamond that has ever been found in the country.
In 1905, the world's largest diamond, the 3,106-carat Cullinan, was discovered in Pretoria, South Africa.
