Prosthetic Paws Help Dog Sit, Stand And Run

This dog now has the chance to stand perfectly, thanks to his new prosthetic paws.

A type of technology developed by 3D Systems has allowed Derby, a husky-mutt dog, to now sit, stand, walk and run just like any other dog, according to health officials.

"He was scooting around on [his] nubs and chest," Melissa Hannon, who rescued Derby through her organization, Peace and Paws, told ABC News in an original interview last December. Back then, Derby first made the news for his first set of smaller prosthetic paws. 

Derby was born without fully-formed front paws--forcing the animal to crawl and use the majority of exertion from his hind legs to get around.

Last year, he got a shorter pair of prosthetic limbs from 3D Systems. Though they helped with some movement, he was a bit hunched over and unable to sit completely normal. Now, the new upgrade has helped Derby overcome all his limitations.

"Derby took to his new prosthetics very well," said Derby's owner, Sherry Portonva, in a video released by 3D Systems. "They raised him up to his proper height," he's sitting like how a real dog sits, which he's never been able to do."
