Introducing VanMoof, the 'Tesla' of the Bike Industry
While Tesla dominates the electric cars industry, VanMoof is carves its own place as the the Tesla of the bike industry with the new Electrified S. The new electric bike, or e-bike, is packed with features and offers "unprecedented connectivity."
The VanMoof e-bike is being pre-sold for $1,000; a price tag that is lower than the retail price until April 30. The Electrified S has a rather simple appearance, like Tesla cars, hiding the technology built into the frame. Its components are simply not added on as an afterthought. The electronics, battery, LED lights, display, and keyless lock are integrated into the bike's frame. The bike can go up to 20 mph and 2.5 times the range of the VanMoof 10 Electrified, Design Boom reports.
A 250W front wheel hub motor delivers the electric assist and a 418Wh 36V 11,6A LG lithium-ion battery that is integrated into the down tube. This in turn powers the motor. Also, there is a boost feature that is useful when facing uphill or going into a headwind, as reported by Gizmag.
The VanMoof e-biken has a charging cycle that takes around 6 hours. Users cannot remove the battery, so batteries cannot be swapped like in Tesla cars. However, the bike can be brought to a service team for battery replacement once its lifecycle, which is estimated to be about 1,000 charging cycles, is surpassed.
The e-bike from VanMoof also features a touch display in the top tube which prominently displays distance traveled, speed, power level, and battery life. Functions like electric pedal assist and power boost are also integrated into the bike. The major parts are protected by anti-theft hardware and the front and back LED lighting offer better visibility on the road.
An app for the bike is also available for download. With the app, users can unlock or lock the bike using Bluetooth connection, track it if it gets stolen, and change power settings if necessary.
VanMoof has stated that deliveries of the e-bike begins June 2016. The e-bike is available in frame colors of black, white, and grey. Additional accessories are reported to be available soon.
