Vegan Cafe Patrons Attacked For Supporting LGBT, Western Ideals
A vegan cafe in Tbilisi, Georgia was attacked by nationalists over the weekend. Most of these attackers were wielding meats, to rally against the restaurant's "alternative" beliefs and values.
Kiwi Cafe is a famous vegan place in the Georgian capital that embraces progressive and liberal values. It is widely known for being a staunch supporter of LGBT rights. However, it seems that some activists cannot stomach what they are about (no pun intended), as reported by BBC News.
On Sunday evening, a dozen men attacked the establishment by throwing sausages and other types of meat at the patrons. Before they started causing a ruckus, they were already there acting brashly and rudely to the annoyance of the regular patrons.
In a statement posted to Facebook, a Kiwi Cafe representative described the scene:
"It all started when they came into the cafe speaking and laughing loudly and didn't care when we asked them to be quiet and not to disturb the people who came to watch the film," the post reads.
"Continuing to act loudly and disturbingly, they pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke. Knowing that all of the above is forbidden here, they were just trying to provoke our friends and disrespect us," the post continued.
According to the representative, they tried to ask the men to leave because they are in a vegan cafe with some rules stating their behaviors are not allowed but the men tried to provoke more conflict. "They didn't leave and started yelling, laughing, and talking to us sarcastically," the representative wrote.
Aggravating the horrible experience is that not only did the police arrived late on the scene, the officers also said that the patrons were to blame. The police did not arrive not until the men already dispersed and yet when they came, they were yelled and pushed the cafe workers.
"One of policemen was very aggressive, pushed us, yelled with anger, said that we are guilty of what had happened," the Kiwi Cafe representative wrote. "Some of cafe workers were brought to police office for interrogation."
According to BBC, the attackers were part of the Bergmann group, a rising conservative faction known for attacking people of Arab or African origin. The attacks took place amidst a growing growing conservatism within the Eastern European nation that views everything Western as bad.
