There have been a number of artists whose social media accounts have been already been hacked by pranksters, and Katy Perry can add herself on the list. The Fireworks' singer's 89 million-follower Twitter account has been hacked. Fans of Perry were shocked to wake up to a series of profanity-filled tweets after the hacker took control of the account.

According to The Guardian, the tweets removed from the popstar's account page sent homophobic messages to users, as well as a bunch of tweets to her arch rival Taylor Swift with one saying, "miss u baby." The hacked account signed off with a tweet telling users to "haha follow @sw4ylol #hackersgonnahack", who appears to have claimed responsibility for the hack.

TechCrunch said that the account, which is still active, claims to be based in Romania and sent its first tweet on May 29. It also tweeted a link to a SoundCloud song entitled "Witness 1.3" which is supposedly by Katy Perry, taken down after a copyright claim by Universal Music Group.

The link to the track shared by a user named "slut" was removed from Twitter and several other tweets from the account. However, the alleged hacker's account still has a takedown notification from SoundCloud for Witness 1.3, which was sent after the song was removed from the service.

Writer Ryan Parker was able to screenshot a picture showing the series of tweets made by the hacker using Perry's account. It is still not clear who was behind this hack/attack. CNBC could not confirm if this user, who has not revealed their real name, is responsible. The "hacker" posted a tweet asking, "Who TF is Katy Perry," NBC News reported.

This incident is another reminder that even though the platform's security measures are good, no one's Twitter account is safe, especially if you are a celebrity. If hackers want to hack your account, they will do it. Other high-profile Twitters that have been hacked include Justin Bieber, Lea Michele, and Britney Spears and even the U.S. Central Command.

Earlier this month, Tumblr said it recently discovered a 2013 data breach and required users to reset their passwords. One security researcher estimates it may have affected 65 million users, however there's no sign indicating that the data breach and Katy Perry's account being hacked are related.

Perry's account has been cleaned of the hacked messages, but has not yet reacted to the intrusion.
