A 4-year-old boy was internally decapitated when he came victim to a car crash during a hailstorm. The boy, Killian Gonzalez and his mother, Brandy, were travelling the icy roads back to Nevada from Idaho, after they celebrated the boy's birthday in May.

The mother-and-son's car smashed head-on into another vehicle. According to Fox News, both Brandy's legs and left arm were fractured, the other driver was not seriously injured, but the boy suffered devastating injuries: he had a right arm fracture, broken ribs, bruised lungs, a ruptured spleen, and incredibly, an internal dislocation of his skull from his spine.

Technically decapitated, they boy's head is connected to his spine only by strands of tissue or muscle. About 70 percent of those who have this type of injury die immediately, while another 15 percent die at the hospital, making Killian's case a rare and amazing one.

The child was likely saved by Nampa Police Department officer and his wife, who were traveling in the same area and came to the vehicle for help. The officer's wife shared with KBOI television station, "We could hear a kid screaming, a little baby screaming. And my husband took a hitch... And he smashed out the back window of Brandy's vehicle."

Young Killian was taken to the hospital, where doctors stabilized his head and neck using different collars, and unbelievably, no surgery was even required.

Speaking about her son's situation, Brady said, "He's doing amazing. He's shocked everyone there. They keep telling me he's the talk of the hospital." She also added, "If they would have moved him a bunch, or tried to take him out, it could have been much worse.

The parent and child are alive, but a GoFundMe page has been set up in their name to help pay for their medical treatments.
